Beauty.AI: The First International Beauty Contest Judged by Artificial Intelligence
Beauty.AI is a pioneering international beauty contest where human selfies are evaluated by an AI-powered robot jury. The project explores how perception of beauty and health can be quantified by machine learning, with the goal of advancing algorithms that assess facial attributes while exploring broader implications for aging, health, and societal norms.
What is it
A competition that invites humans to submit selfies via an app and invites data scientists to contribute algorithms to a Robot Jury. The AI-based jury evaluates facial features to determine beauty and health-related criteria, with public leaderboards and prizes from technology partners.
How it works
- A human submits a selfie through a dedicated app.
- The Robot Jury, comprised of trained deep neural networks, evaluates the photo on various attributes (wrinkles, facial symmetry, skin color, gender, age group, ethnicity, and more).
- Data scientists can submit their algorithms to the Robot Jury to influence evaluation.
- The results feed a public leaderboard, and winners are celebrated as the first humans and robot-judged beauty contestants.
Entry rules
- Humans: AI will judge beauty. NO makeup, NO beard, NO glasses. By submitting a photo, you agree that your image may be shown publicly if you reach the leaderboard.
- Robots: Robot Jury welcomes data scientists to submit their algorithms to participate. The jury trains on diverse facial attributes before evaluating entries.
Timeline
- Entry deadlines for Humans and Robots, with winners announced on January 15–28, 2016 (dates provided in the project overview).
Leaderboard
- Public ranking of participants based on AI-driven evaluation.
- Recognition for both Human Winners and Robot Jury participants.

What matters in beauty
Perception is central: beauty is largely how others perceive you. The project emphasizes that perception is biased, and seeks to explore how machines can glean health and beauty signals from facial features while acknowledging the social implications.
How the project envisions impact
The team aims to combine deep learning, symbolic reasoning, and semantic analysis to build algorithms that capture perception-related beauty and health cues. There is an emphasis on long-term potential to derive medical and health insights from facial data while addressing ethical and societal considerations.
