MacGPT brings ChatGPT to your Mac in multiple convenient forms: a global textfield, inline prompts in any text field, a native menu-bar access point, and direct website access. It supports API key usage, multiple conversations, and both typing and speaking (conversation mode). The tool is available on macOS (Monterey and Ventura) and also as GeePeeTee on iPhone, with free access and optional paid features via API usage.

How it Works / Modes

  • Global: Activate a middle-screen textfield to chat with ChatGPT anywhere on your Mac.
  • Inline: Trigger ChatGPT within any text field by typing a trigger phrase and your prompt; ChatGPT handles the rest.
  • Menubar: Quick access to ChatGPT from the menu bar, either via the website or a native app/API integration.
  • Web/Native Access: Open the ChatGPT website in a native-like app or use the API directly.
  • Conversation Mode: Speak to ChatGPT and have back-and-forth conversations without typing.
  • Multiple Conversations: Create and manage several conversations with different prompts for easy reuse.
  • API Key Support: Use your own OpenAI API key for a faster, personalized experience; GPT-4 may require API access via sign-up/waitlist.

How to Use MacGPT

  1. Install MacGPT and launch.
  2. Choose your preferred mode: Global, Inline, or Menubar.
  3. If using API key, enter your OpenAI API key to enable native/extended features.
  4. Start a conversation via typing or speaking (Conversation Mode).
  5. Save transcripts or copy full conversations for reference.
